  • Healing springs versus coal - the two faces of mining

    🕒 Time: 14:00 - 16:00
📍 Location: Kyselská 122, Bílina (Museum Lecture Hall)

Mining is not the same as mining, or healing and fuel mineral wealth

Many consider 1989 to be the year of the environmental protests that began in Teplice. But few realize what 1889 looked like in the same place. Imagine the endless expanses of Dante's hell in the excavated trenches (Abraham) with burning and smoldering heaps. A landscape dotted with countless sinkholes – often of enormous dimensions – between which only narrow dirt paths trodden by the local inhabitants wound their way. These were the so-called pinks (the pings), caused by the collapse of chambers during deep mining.

The town of Most was already beginning to be cautiously described in tourist guides as unsuitable for accommodation – due to the omnipresent smell of “coal fumes”. The town of Teplice was literally fighting against the mining encirclement. The spa committee was in sharp conflict with the interests of the Teplice mining directorate and the borders of the mining areas were mercilessly approaching the spa town. Poplar avenues, hastily planted on the outskirts of the town, were only a weak help against the suffocating smoke from hundreds of steam engines and locomotives, which built the economic power of the region with their omnipresent sidings.

Our Bílina is also a city of fascinating contrasts. On the one hand, a world-unique healing water springs from the depths of the earth, which was served at imperial courts, on the other hand, the same earth has been dug into by tools from brown coal mines for centuries. How do delicate spa care and the heavy mining industry go together?

During this lecture, we will delve into the geological and historical paradox of our region. You will learn:

    • How the interests of coal miners and protectors of healing springs have historically clashed.

    • Whether coal mining only threatened the springs, or whether, on the contrary, it helped to discover new deposits.

    • What a masterful role in this delicate balancing act was played by the Lobkowicz family and the famous upper councilor A. Reuss, whose monument proudly stands in our premises.

    • What is the future of a landscape where "blue gold" (water) and "black gold" (coal) meet at a crossroads?

Come discuss, breathe in history, and look at our landscape from a completely new perspective.

About sources, their history and present. And not only that.

Come inside! This lecture, or perhaps we should call it a "discussion", is not only about the phenomenon of our healing spa springs. It is also a story about places in our lives, the meaning of which remained completely unknown to us, perhaps until adulthood. Today, each of us can be a tourist in our own city. In the meadows, in the forests and in abandoned areas, old stories that have almost been forgotten await.

Depending on the weather, we can also take a look around the bottling plant and visit the Bílinská kyselka Museum exhibition during our meeting.

The event takes place in the conference hall of the Bílinská kyselka on the first floor, which you can reach through the Info Center, where the entrance fee is 70,- for children under 15 years of age and 150,- for those 15 years of age and older.

    🕒 Time: 15:00 - 16:00
    📍 Location: Kyselská 122, Mostecké Předměsti, 418 01 Bílina-Bílina 1, Czech Republic

Throughout our childhood in the Teplice region, abandoned places with the remains of industrial buildings were a big mystery to us. While playing “outside”, we constantly came across concrete skeletons, strange gates and bridges, or the remains of railway tracks in places that made no sense. We went on expeditions through impenetrable thickets that had apparently been abandoned for decades. Back then, we called them “Teplice mysteries” and none of us had a concrete idea of what they actually meant.

Today we know that most of these secrets – smoking heaps, old tailings and mine shafts – were part of a massive mining operation that shaped not only the distant horizon but also the streets we lived in. It’s a fascinating moment: you’ve been looking out the window for years at something unknown, only to suddenly realize that you’re looking at an abandoned brown coal mine right in the middle of the city. Suddenly, even the closed houses in Trnovany, with the symbol of inverted hammers on the doors and the inscription “Do not enter – mined”, start to make sense. It’s those hammers, turned to the ground, that are a silent witness to the end of an era.

All of us who live in this region walk through abandoned mine workings every day, and it is surprising to discover what lies beneath us. This lecture will allow you to see your native region in a new, surprising perspective. You will become a tourist in your own city, and thanks to old archives, unique maps, and modern visualizations, we will absorb the spirit of these places together. Let's uncover the secrets that lie hidden right under our feet.

The event takes place in the conference hall of the Bílinská kyselka on the first floor, which you can reach through the Info Center, where the entrance fee is 70,- for children under 15 years of age and 150,- for those 15 years of age and older.

We look forward to spending the afternoon together.
